UPPERCUT SHORT HOOK DRILL
Sifu Dino’s training tip of the month

In U.C.S. we use full contact sparring to develop many of our fighting characteristics.
There are many, including: conditioning, fear control, distance, timing, defense, offense,
countering skills, footwork, stamina, endurance, contact conditioning.

In the boxing range (where you can hit your partner with a strike) there are 2 ranges (or distances) long range - where the straight lead or rear crosss would most likely be used.  And close range where you would use short hooks and uppercuts to the head and body.

The short hook uppercut drill will help you to develop speed, power, defense, contact conditioning, and heightened sense of touch.

As with all contact oriented drills - make sure you wear appropriate safety gear.  Headgear, boxing gloves, mouthpiece.

Stand in front of your partner in close range - gauge this by seeing if you can hit your partner with a tight short hook punch.  Maintain this range at all times.  Now start punching:  throw a hook to the head or body, or uppercuts.  You can play roles (offense and defense with your partner) or you can just throw them and have your partner react.  He can also counter while you're throwing so beware.
Work on your defense (ducking, shielding, palming for uppercuts).

Use a countdown timer - go for 2-3 rounds of 2 minutes.

Try to jam your partner and use angular footwork to jam his hand and hit the body.  Work on combos: hook, uppercut. or double-up on hooks.

Have fun!!
